The Going Down of the Sun — Dol Fodha na Grèine

We’re proud to launch the companion web site for the magnificent ‘Going Down of the Sun Dol Fodha na Grèine’ by Donald A. Morrison with Annie Macsween and Iain G. Macdonald. Many thanks to the community for the wonderful contributions they have made to this important historical document from Acair Ltd.

Comunn Eachdraidh Nis

If you’re passing through Ness on the Island of Lewis this summer then a visit to Comunn Eachdraidh Nis is a must. Based in the former Cross Primary School, it is situated on the main road leading to the Butt of Lewis. There you will find an accredited museum, a vast archive, exhibitions and a café. Ample parking spaces, including coach parking as well as disabled access and toilets are provided. A small selection of local crafts and publications can be purchased. CEN staff are on hand to assist and will be happy to answer any questions you have in Gaelic/English. The centre can cater for parties of up to 60. Prior booking is essential for large groups.

Comunn Eachdraidh Nis — The Ness Historical Society (CEN) was constituted in 1977 as the first Comunn Eachdraidh in the Western Isles and covers the area of North Lewis from the Butt of Lewis to Ballantrushal. It also holds information about the offshore islands of North Rona and Sulaisgeir.

The CEN Mission Statement is: To preserve and promote the history, language, culture and heritage of the Ness to Ballantrushal area of the Isle of Lewis for the benefit of the local community, its visitors and future generations.
